The story of Borders (UK)
The American-origin Borders bookshop concept arrived in Britain in 1998, offering large stores with extensive book ranges and places to browse. The UK business entered administration in November 2009 and its final stores closed in December 2009. This entry concerns the UK operation.
Historical business dossier
Founders and origins
Borders began as an American bookselling business founded by brothers Tom and Louis Borders in Michigan in 1971. The UK business grew through large-format bookstores with cafés, music and magazine departments.
Ownership through the years
The UK chain was historically connected to Borders Group in the US. In 2007 the UK and Ireland operation was sold to private-equity-backed investors, separating it from the American parent.
Decline and administration
High property costs, weakening physical book and music sales, online competition and financial pressures contributed to Borders UK entering administration in November 2009. Its remaining shops closed before Christmas 2009.
Financial performance and scale
The UK business operated dozens of stores; exact numbers depend on whether Books etc. branches and different dates are included. US Borders Group revenue is not a valid proxy for UK sales.
Who owns the brand today?
The original UK retail operation ceased. The US parent subsequently liquidated in 2011. Any surviving UK rights to the Borders name require a trademark search rather than an assumption based on the former parent.
