Thomas Cook
A pioneering travel name associated with package holidays and high-street agents.
The story of Thomas Cook
Thomas Cook organised an early rail excursion in 1841, helping establish a name that would become closely associated with organised tourism. Over generations the business expanded into travel agencies, tour operations and airlines.
Thomas Cook Group collapsed in September 2019, leading to the closure of its UK travel-agency network and the repatriation of holidaymakers. The Thomas Cook name later returned under new ownership, separate from the original group.
Historical business dossier
Founders and origins
Thomas Cook organised an excursion from Leicester to Loughborough in 1841, laying the foundations of the travel business that took his name. The company developed organised tours, travel agencies and later package holidays.
Ownership through the years
Over its long history the group underwent multiple mergers and ownership changes, including the formation of Thomas Cook Group plc in 2007. After the 2019 collapse, Fosun Tourism Group acquired brand rights; eSky Group completed its acquisition of the online Thomas Cook business in October 2024, excluding China.
Decline and administration
Thomas Cook Group collapsed in September 2019 after heavy debts, intense competition, changing holiday-booking habits and unsuccessful rescue financing. The historic airline and tour operator ceased; a distinct online travel business later revived the name.
Financial performance and scale
A financial comparison should use Thomas Cook Group plc annual reports and specify fiscal year and accounting scope. No audited revenue figure is asserted in this batch.
Who owns the brand today?
The online Thomas Cook business is part of eSky Group following its October 2024 acquisition. Rights for China were excluded from the deal; trademark ownership is territory-dependent.
