Dixons
Dixons developed from a photographic business into one of Britain’s best-known high-street electrical retailers.
The story of Dixons
Dixons developed from a photographic business into one of Britain’s best-known high-street electrical retailers. Its stores sold cameras, televisions, audio equipment and computers, often promoting competitive prices and a broad product range. In 2006 the main UK high-street Dixons chain was rebranded Currys.digital; the Dixons name continued in other contexts for a period.
Historical business dossier
Founders and origins
Charles Kalms opened a photographic studio in Southend-on-Sea in 1937 and developed the business into Dixons, a leading retailer of cameras, televisions, computers and other electrical goods.
Ownership through the years
Dixons expanded as a listed retail group and acquired Currys and PC World. The group renamed itself Dixons Retail in 2010 and merged with Carphone Warehouse in 2014 to form Dixons Carphone, subsequently renamed Currys plc.
Decline and administration
The Dixons high-street fascia was retired in the UK as stores were converted or consolidated under Currys and PC World. The disappearance of the Dixons name was a rebranding decision, not a standalone Dixons administration.
Financial performance and scale
Historic consolidated Dixons Retail turnover includes multiple chains and overseas operations; it must not be labelled Dixons shop-only sales. The 2014 merger was a major corporate restructuring, not a liquidation.
Who owns the brand today?
The Dixons name has been used in airport retail and by related businesses. Current brand and trademark ownership should be checked against Currys corporate records and the UK IPO register.
