JJB Sports grew from a sports shop into a major UK chain selling branded trainers, replica football shirts, sporting equipment and leisurewear. It became a prominent presence on high streets and retail parks. Financial difficulties led to administration in 2012, with some shops and assets acquired by Sports Direct.

Founders and origins
JJB Sports was founded in Wigan in 1971 by John Jarvis Broughton, whose initials gave the chain its name. Dave Whelan acquired the business and developed it into a major UK sportswear retailer.
Ownership through the years
Under Dave Whelan JJB grew rapidly and floated on the stock market. Later investors and management teams attempted to restructure the business as competition intensified.
Decline and administration
JJB struggled with debt, falling sales, costly leases and competition from Sports Direct and other retailers. It entered administration in September 2012; Sports Direct bought selected assets and stores, not the whole chain as a going concern.
Financial performance and scale
Contemporary reports put the estate at roughly 250 shops and about 4,000–6,000 workers depending on the date and inclusion criteria. Historic revenue needs the corresponding JJB Sports plc annual report.
Who owns the brand today?
The original chain closed. Sports Direct acquired certain assets; that does not establish present ownership of every JJB trademark. Confirm relevant registrations before making a legal ownership claim.
