BRANDARIUM / BRAND HISTORY

BHS

British Home Stores was a familiar fixture of British high streets for decades.

The story of BHS

British Home Stores, later known as BHS, began in 1928. It grew into a nationwide chain selling affordable clothing, household goods and lighting. Its large high-street and shopping-centre branches became particularly associated with homewares and family shopping.

After years of changing ownership and difficult trading, the UK business entered administration in 2016 and its stores closed. The BHS name subsequently continued in other forms, particularly online and in lighting, so the closure date here refers to the original UK chain.

Historical business dossier

Founders and origins

British Home Stores opened in 1928 as a value-led variety retailer. It grew into a familiar department-store chain known for clothing, lighting and homewares. Its early individual founders are not confidently established in the cited material.

Ownership through the years

Sir Philip Green acquired BHS in 2000; it later sat within the Green family-controlled Taveta/Arcadia structure. In March 2015 it was sold for £1 to Retail Acquisitions Ltd, led by Dominic Chappell.

Decline and administration

The chain faced sustained losses, a substantial pension deficit and inadequate investment. A joint parliamentary inquiry criticised the 2015 disposal, corporate governance and the conduct of successive owners. Administration followed on 25 April 2016 and stores closed later that year.

Financial performance and scale

11,000 jobs were at risk at administration; a pension deficit of hundreds of millions of pounds was a central concern. This is not a turnover figure.

Who owns the brand today?

The original department-store operation closed. The present registered trademark proprietor requires a current UK IPO register check; later online uses of the name do not establish legal ownership.
