Blockbuster UK
A Friday-night institution for film and game rentals.
The story of Blockbuster UK
Blockbuster grew internationally as a video-rental chain during the VHS and DVD eras. UK branches offered films and games to rent or buy, and the brand became strongly associated with browsing shelves for weekend entertainment.
Online rental, streaming and changing consumer habits undermined the physical-store model. The UK operation went through administration in 2013 and its remaining shops closed that year. The UK closure is distinct from the history of the brand in other countries.
Historical business dossier
Founders and origins
Blockbuster originated in the United States in 1985, founded by David Cook. The UK operation expanded as a high-street video and games rental chain.
Ownership through the years
The global Blockbuster business was acquired by Dish Network in 2011. Its UK subsidiaries, Blockbuster Entertainment Ltd and Blockbuster GB Ltd, entered administration in January 2013.
Decline and administration
Digital downloads, streaming and internet-based rental services undermined the physical rental model, while the UK operation was loss-making. Deloitte was appointed administrator on 16 January 2013.
Financial performance and scale
At administration the UK business had 528 stores and about 4,190 jobs at risk. The UK operation recorded more than £3.5bn aggregate sales over the preceding 15 years, not annual turnover.
Who owns the brand today?
The original UK shops closed. Historic ownership of the global Blockbuster rights does not by itself verify the present UK trademark owner; check live registrations.
