Brantano began as a Belgian footwear retailer founded by the Brantegem family, later expanding into the United Kingdom with large-format shoe shops.
Ownership through the years
The business expanded internationally and became associated with Macintosh Retail Group. UK operations were sold and restructured through successive owners, including Alteri Investors.
Decline and administration
The UK chain faced weak demand, competitive pressures and difficult store economics. UK subsidiaries entered administration in 2016 and again in 2017 under successor arrangements; the UK stores eventually closed.
Financial performance and scale
At the 2016 UK administration roughly 200 shops and about 2,000 staff were involved. Belgian operations and global figures must not be conflated with UK-only revenue or insolvency.
