Debenhams
A historic British department-store name whose physical UK shops closed in 2021.
The story of Debenhams
Debenhams traced its origins to a London drapery business founded in 1778. Through partnerships and acquisitions it developed into one of Britain’s best-known department-store groups, selling fashion, beauty, furniture and homewares.
The business expanded across UK town centres and shopping malls. Following financial difficulties, its remaining UK stores closed in 2021. The Debenhams name and online business were acquired separately, so the brand should not be described as having disappeared entirely.
Historical business dossier
Founders and origins
William Clark established a drapery shop in London in 1778. William Debenham joined the enterprise in 1813; the business later became a nationwide department-store group.
Ownership through the years
The business passed through various public and private ownership structures; in the 2000s it underwent private-equity ownership and a return to the stock market. Its brand and website were purchased by Boohoo in 2021.
Decline and administration
Heavy lease commitments, indebtedness, changing shopping habits and competitive pressures contributed to repeated financial distress. Debenhams entered administration in 2019 and again in 2020; the physical shops shut in 2021.
Financial performance and scale
Debenhams plc reported approximately £2.28bn revenue for financial year 2018, a group figure rather than a measure of the subsequent online brand.
Who owns the brand today?
The name continues as an online retailer in the Boohoo/Debenhams group. Specific trademark registrations and corporate holders should be checked separately.
