The story of Focus DIY
Focus DIY became a familiar name on out-of-town retail parks, selling home improvement materials, decorating supplies and garden products. The business expanded through acquisitions and operated in a competitive market alongside B&Q and Homebase. Focus entered administration in 2011 and its remaining stores closed or were transferred.
Historical business dossier
Founders and origins
Focus grew from Focus Homecentres developed by Mike Williams in the 1980s. The business became a major DIY chain through expansion and acquisitions, including Do It All and Wickes.
Ownership through the years
Focus was associated with the Choice Group, acquired Do It All from Boots in 1998, and later owned Wickes before selling it to Travis Perkins in 2005. Cerberus Capital acquired Focus in 2007 for a nominal price.
Decline and administration
Acquisition debt, difficult DIY trading, underperforming shops and persistent losses led to restructuring. Focus entered administration in May 2011; remaining stores closed by July 2011 after some outlets were sold to other retailers.
Financial performance and scale
At administration Focus had approximately 178 stores. Reports cited about £25m losses in the preceding year; confirm the entity and period in administrator reports before treating this as an audited annual figure.
Who owns the brand today?
The operating chain closed. The brand was sold after administration; subsequent reports associate its trademarks with the Walker/Victorian Plumbing group, but current proprietor should be checked on the IPO register.
