Kwik Save (original chain)
The supermarket built around keeping prices low.
The story of Kwik Save (original chain)
Kwik Save grew from a no-frills grocery business founded by Albert Gubay in North Wales in 1959. The chain became known for discount supermarket shopping, but intense competition and financial problems led the original chain into administration in 2007. The name was later revived for other convenience-store operations, distinct from the original chain.
Historical business dossier
Founders and origins
Kwik Save developed from a discount grocery business established by Albert Gubay in north Wales in the late 1950s, expanding through a no-frills supermarket model and a recognisable price-led identity.
Ownership through the years
The chain expanded through public-market ownership and acquisitions. Somerfield acquired Kwik Save in 1998, later selling the struggling brand and remaining stores to a consortium led by Paul Niklas in 2006.
Decline and administration
Competition from larger supermarkets and discounters, a dated store estate, weak availability and cash-flow pressures damaged the business. Kwik Save Limited entered administration in July 2007 and most remaining original stores closed.
Financial performance and scale
At its height the chain operated hundreds of stores; counts vary materially by year and after Somerfield conversions. Do not confuse historic Somerfield consolidated sales with Kwik Save-only turnover.
Who owns the brand today?
The original national chain ceased. Later businesses have reused the Kwik Save name, but this does not demonstrate that the original operating company survived. Current UK trademark proprietor requires verification.
