Mothercare
Mothercare specialised in products for expectant parents, babies and young children.
The story of Mothercare
Mothercare began in 1961 and became a well-known specialist retailer of baby clothing, prams, nursery furniture and maternity goods. Large Mothercare World branches were a recognisable feature of UK retail parks.
Its UK store operation went into administration in 2019, with UK shops closing. The wider brand and international licensing activities have continued; the store closure date is not the end of the brand worldwide.
Historical business dossier
Founders and origins
The first Mothercare shop opened in Surrey in 1961, initially specialising in pushchairs, nursery furniture and maternity clothing. Selim Zilkha and James Goldsmith are commonly identified with its foundation; early corporate records merit further checking.
Ownership through the years
Mothercare floated in 1972, merged with Habitat in 1982 and became part of Storehouse in 1986. It later operated independently as Mothercare plc, buying Early Learning Centre in 2007 and selling that business in 2019.
Decline and administration
The UK retail subsidiary struggled with store costs and sustained losses; Mothercare UK entered administration in November 2019 and its UK stores closed by early 2020. The wider listed group did not cease trading: it shifted to an international franchise and brand-licensing model.
Financial performance and scale
Mothercare plc group revenue for FY2019 is reported at around £513.8m in historical financial summaries; verify against the archived annual report before publishing as an audited figure.
Who owns the brand today?
Mothercare plc says its subsidiary Mothercare Global Brand Limited owns and manages the brand, with franchise partners including Boots in the UK.
