The story of Peacocks
Peacocks traces its origins to a Victorian family business and developed into a familiar value-fashion chain on British high streets. Known for affordable clothing for women, men and children, the company experienced major ownership changes and financial restructuring, including administration in 2012. The Peacocks brand continued trading afterwards, so it should not be described as permanently defunct.
Historical business dossier
Founders and origins
Peacocks traces its origins to a family business founded by Albert Frank Peacock in Warrington in 1884. It evolved from general goods into a value fashion chain.
Ownership through the years
The business expanded as Peacocks Group, acquiring Bonmarché in 2002. Following its 2012 administration, Edinburgh Woollen Mill acquired the Peacocks brand and selected stores. Later restructuring affected the group again.
Decline and administration
Debt and difficult high-street trading led to Peacocks Group entering administration in January 2012. The brand continued under new ownership; a separate 2020 administration and subsequent rescue affected the successor operation.
Financial performance and scale
The 2012 administration involved around 550 Peacocks shops and thousands of jobs; figures vary with whether other group brands are included. Use Peacocks-specific accounts where available.
Who owns the brand today?
Peacocks-branded stores and online retail have continued following restructurings. Current operating company and trademark proprietor should be checked separately, as they need not be identical.
