Phones 4u
Phones 4u was a prominent independent mobile-phone retailer.
The story of Phones 4u
Phones 4u grew from the mobile-phone retail operations associated with entrepreneur John Caudwell. Its UK high-street shops sold handsets and mobile contracts from major networks and became known for energetic advertising.
After key network supply agreements ended, the company entered administration in September 2014 and its retail shops closed.
Historical business dossier
Founders and origins
Phones 4u grew from the UK mobile-phone retail business developed by entrepreneur John Caudwell, who founded the wider Caudwell Group in the 1980s. It sold handsets and network contracts through independent shops.
Ownership through the years
The business passed from Caudwell ownership to private-equity investors, including Providence Equity Partners and later BC Partners, which owned it when it failed.
Decline and administration
In 2014 Vodafone and EE decided not to renew key network supply agreements. Without those networks the retailer said its business model was no longer viable, despite reporting substantial profits. It moved into administration in September 2014.
Financial performance and scale
Contemporary reporting cited approximately 550 stores, 5,596 employees and management claims of annual profits above £100m; the latter is a company statement, not an independently verified audited net-profit figure.
Who owns the brand today?
