The story of Poundworld
Poundworld became a major British discount chain associated with low fixed-price merchandise and later a wider range of value products. Its shops offered household essentials, toiletries, stationery and food. The chain entered administration in 2018, resulting in widespread store closures; later uses of the name should be distinguished from the original chain.
Historical business dossier
Founders and origins
The Edwards family developed a discount shop business in Yorkshire in the 1970s. Chris Edwards and his father grew the operation, which evolved through Bargain Centre and Everything £1 into Poundworld.
Ownership through the years
The business was built by the Edwards family. US private-equity group TPG acquired a majority stake in 2015; the retailer expanded but faced rising operational pressures.
Decline and administration
Poundworld entered administration in June 2018 after difficult trading, rising costs and failed rescue efforts. The original estate was wound down, with its remaining stores closing that summer.
Financial performance and scale
Around 335–350 shops and several thousand jobs were involved in 2018. Published estimates vary by date; these figures should not be presented as annual turnover.
Who owns the brand today?
The original chain closed. Related discount retail ventures and subsequent uses of the Poundworld name do not necessarily indicate continuity or the same trademark proprietor; verify current registrations.
