BRANDARIUM / BRAND HISTORY

Safeway (UK supermarkets)

A familiar supermarket name from the pre-Morrisons era.

The story of Safeway (UK supermarkets)

Safeway became a familiar supermarket name across Britain. In March 2004 Morrisons acquired Safeway plc and progressively converted many of its stores to the Morrisons name, while others were divested. This profile covers the former UK supermarket chain, not the unrelated continuing use of Safeway in other countries or later UK brand licences.

Historical business dossier

Founders and origins

The British Safeway chain began in 1962 through a UK venture linked to the American Safeway supermarket company. It developed into a national supermarket operator with a strong presence in Scotland and southern England.

Ownership through the years

Argyll Foods acquired the British Safeway operation in 1987 and later adopted the Safeway name. Morrisons bought Safeway plc in 2004, converting many stores to Morrisons and disposing of others to competitors.

Decline and administration

Safeway UK did not collapse into administration as a national supermarket chain: its identity was phased out following Morrisons’ takeover and store conversions. This is a takeover-and-rebranding story, not an insolvency case.

Financial performance and scale

The 2004 transaction was valued in the billions of pounds. Historical Safeway plc annual accounts should be used for any precise turnover, profits or store-count series; Morrisons’ later results are not directly comparable.

Who owns the brand today?

Morrisons has subsequently used the Safeway name for some wholesale and convenience ranges. The legal owner of each relevant trademark should be confirmed from current registrations.
