BRANDARIUM / BRAND HISTORY

Woolworths (UK)

A high-street name remembered by generations.

The story of Woolworths (UK)

The British F. W. Woolworth chain opened in Liverpool in 1909 and became a fixture of UK shopping streets. The UK retail business entered administration in 2008, and its remaining stores closed in January 2009. It was particularly associated with inexpensive household goods, music, toys and Pick n Mix confectionery. This profile concerns the former UK chain, not other businesses using the Woolworths name.

Historical business dossier

Founders and origins

Frank Winfield Woolworth founded the American five-and-dime business in 1879. The British subsidiary opened its first store in Liverpool in 1909 and became a fixture of high streets, selling household goods, toys, confectionery and music.

Ownership through the years

The UK business began within the US F. W. Woolworth group. It later became independent, and Kingfisher acquired Woolworths in the 1980s. Kingfisher demerged Woolworths Group plc in 2001; the group also owned Entertainment UK and 2 entertain.

Decline and administration

A weakening general-merchandise proposition, intense competition, debt, difficult trading and the 2008 credit crisis contributed to failure. Woolworths Group’s retail and distribution businesses entered administration in November 2008; the final original UK shops closed in January 2009.

Financial performance and scale

Around 800 UK shops and roughly 27,000 retail employees were affected in 2008. The published Woolworths Group accounts include wholesale and entertainment divisions, so group turnover must not be presented as shop-only revenue.

Who owns the brand today?

Shop Direct acquired the Woolworths brand in 2009 and operated an online version for a period. Later brand-name ownership and trademark status require a current UK IPO register check; the original high-street chain did not resume.
